In the final Wooster Daily Record baseball power rankings for the regular season, we have a number of strong teams, including two defending state champions, that are leading the way in a pretty good-looking field at season's end before tournament time starts.
(Note: Results and win-loss records are through Sunday.)
All Wayne County Athletic League teams here, Hillsdale, winners of five of their last six games, are a pretty good team and they still only sit eighth in these power rankings. They have wins over Tuslaw and Chippewa, who are ahead of them. The Falcons are currently second behind Waynedale − with three league games left − in a WCAL that is always competitive at the top.
Both Triway and Tuslaw, at one point in time, were top two in the Principals Athletic Conference standings but now are second (Tuslaw) and third (Triway). Triway's two wins over Tuslaw place them ahead in these rankings. Looking through the tournament draws that were recently released, both the Titans and Mustangs have a great chance at winning district titles.
Chippewa has made a big jump in the last couple of weeks, as the Chipps are 12-4 in their last 16 games, including a huge victory over powerhouse Waynedale at home 7-6 last Thursday, May 7. As the top seed (No. 3 seed) in their side of the district tournament, Chippewa will be the presumed pick to win a district title.
Currently first place in the PAC (9-1 league record), and ahead of Triway and Tuslaw, Orrville has been pretty steady on the field for about a month now. The Red Riders will meet Tuslaw for a two-game set on Monday, May 11 and Wednesday, May 13 that could very well determine who wins the league.
Wooster base runner Brock Bowen slides under the tag at home by Lexington catcher Cole Eochorn. This was Wooster's first game after second baseman Maddox Graser died after a game earlier in the season.
After not playing for 12 days because of the death of sophomore second baseman Maddox Graser on April 24, Wooster made their emotional return to the diamond last Monday in their 7-2 home win over Lexington. Since the Generals return, they are 3-0 and are still undefeated (9-0) in Ohio Cardinal Conference play. Wooster and New Philadelphia (12-0 in OCC play) are the top two teams in the OCC and the two games between the schools on Tuesday, May 12 and Wednesday, May 13 will probably decide who will be the outright OCC champion or maybe even co-OCC champions.
The No. 1 ranked team in Division VI, according to MaxPreps, is on a 10-game winning streak and is closing in on another Inter Valley South Conference title. The Hawks are the No. 1 seed in their district tournament and the three-time defending state champions will be expected to make another deep postseason run, where they will aim to be the last team standing in Akron come June.
For the No. 2 ranked team in Division V, another WCAL title is well within reach and the Golden Bears are coming off two wins over the weekend where they outscored Harrison Central and Toronto 22-1. To show just how proficient Waynedale has been this season, look no further then to its impressive +79 run differential through 22 games (have scored 101 runs; have allowed just 22 runs). Waynedale, just like Hiland, will be expected to get back to state in Akron.
