Spending and budgets have dominated the narrative duration the college basketball offseason. Coaches have provided fans with some pretty interesting insight into the figures that their programs and competing schools are dealing with when it comes to NIL compensation packages.
UConn head coach Dan Hurley jumped into the conversation on a recent episode of The Field of 68, sharing a baseline financial threshold for teams who want to have legitimate Final Four aspirations.
âStaffs donât want to look like weâre paying the max. But youâve got to be spending, Iâd imagine, somewhere north of $14 (million) if you want to be in contention to compete at the top of the big league or to try to play deep into the tournament," Hurley said on the podcast.
The Huskies coach spoke about agents being plugged into the value of their collegiate clients to Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman, which allowed him to come up with the $14 million minimum roster valuation.
âBecause now that the agents are so involved, whether itâs domestic or international, theyâre so dialed into, âWhatâs the role? Hereâs the number, hereâs the range, hereâs the market,'" Hurley said. "Anyone that says theyâre getting these big discounts on these premium players just because they want to go play at their school."
Despite the seemingly mandatory spending spree, Hurley does feel like programs can save money in one area.
âNow, I think retention, youâre always going to get players. If you run a good program and youâre doing things the right way, youâre going to get a hometown discount on your on retention guys."
