ESPN's Stephen A. Smith has been cursed by Danhausen, the World Wrestling Entertainment Superstar with Metro Detroit roots.
Let's back up just a bit.
It's WrestleMania week, and the WWE Superstars have been making the media rounds. That includes Danhausen, the ghoulish comic alter ego of Warren-raised Donovan Danhausen.
The Danhausen character, who wears white face paint and dresses like the host of a horror movie marathon on local TV, is known for making outlandish demands on management, carrying around a jar of human teeth and putting a "curse" on those who come between him and his dreams of money and fame.
On Friday, during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take," Danhausen ā who describes himself as "very nice, very evil" ā interrupted a segment and got into a light back-and-forth with outspoken host Stephen A. Smith.
"You know, you're a bad luck charm," Smith told Danhausen after he appeared on the show and attempted to overtake ESPN's airwaves. "Why are you up here?"
"I heard that you're a big New York Knicks fan," Danhausen told Smith. "And, you know, I could curse their enemies. However, you've been very, very, very rude to Danhausen, so unfortunately, you are cursed, Stephen A. Smith!" he said, pointing in Smith's direction and making a hex-like gesture.
"What did you say? If you don't get the hell out of here..." Smith said, and just like that, Danhausen was gone.
The segment was all in good fun, of course, and follows suit with Danhausen's usual appearances, which typically find him bumping into someone, cursing them, and then disappearing into thin air.
Danhausen ā he shuffled around Metro Detroit in his early years and eventually landed in Warren, where he attended and graduated from Lincoln High School ā joined WWE in February and received a mixed reaction from fans, who were perhaps unfamiliar with his comic-horror gimmick.
It's a learning curve he's used to.
"A lot of people, when they first hear me or see me, it's jarring, and sometimes they hate it immediately. But then, for whatever reason, they'll want to watch a little bit more," heĀ . "And the more they watch, the more they fall in love with the character. They find something to relate to in it."
Danhausen cursed Stephen A. Smith as part of his promotional activities during WrestleMania week.
Danhausen's real name is Donovan Danhausen, and he is from Warren, Michigan.
WrestleMania week is significant as it is a major event for WWE, where Superstars engage in promotional activities and appearances.
Danhausen is known for his unique ghoulish comic persona and entertaining character in WWE.

True to form, Danhausen has since become immensely popular with fans and has become one of the company's top merch movers. On WWE's online shop, he's currently featured among the top 10 sellers, alongside stars like Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.
Those other wrestlers have defined roles at this weekend's WrestleMania, which takes place Saturday and Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Danhausen doesn't have a match on the card for either day, but he'll undoubtedly be a part of the program in some fashion.
Danhausen, 35, toiled on the the indie wrestling circuit before signing with All Elite Wrestling in January 2022. His WWE debut came at the Elimination Chamber event in Chicago on Feb. 28.
The "curses" he's imparted during his WWE run have, so far, resulted in bad luck for those who have befallen them. Dominik Mysterio lost a title belt after incurring a Danhausen curse, and streamer IShowSpeed is now in a WrestleMania match after being on the receiving end of one of his curses.
Now, it appears to be Smith's turn to face whatever he has coming.
WrestleMania airs at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday via the ESPN+Ā app, which is a part of the ESPN UnlimitedĀ subscription. The first hour of the show will air on ESPN2 on Saturday and on ESPN on Sunday.
