Nunez cost the Saudi side over £40m (Sky Sports) in a much-anticipated deal. In fact, Al-Hilal had chased the player since the previous January - a story exclusively broken here at Anfield Watch.
But things have been a bit of a disaster. That's not really the player's fault, though - Nunez has decent numbers for the minutes he's played.
The real problem was Al-Hilal's decision to replace him with Karim Benzema after just a few months. Nunez has been out of the squad ever since and isn't part of the plans there.

Al-Hilal Performance and Stats
As of 5 May 2026, Darwin Núñez is enduring a turbulent period following his £46.1 million move to Al-Hilal last summer. The 26-year-old has been omitted from Al-Hilal's domestic Saudi Pro League squad since February to accommodate Karim Benzema under foreign-player quota rules. Consequently, his involvement has been restricted to the AFC Champions League, where he recently scored twice against Al Wahda. In 16 total appearances this season, he has recorded six goals and four assists with an average FotMob rating of 7.38.
International Standing and Crisis
Núñez’s lack of domestic minutes has placed his 2026 World Cup spot in jeopardy. He has failed to score for Uruguay in his last 13 appearances, a drought dating back to June 2024. Manager Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly hesitant to start the striker this June, with local media suggesting he has fallen to third-choice behind younger attacking options.
