Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing made the most of another opportunity Monday, hitting two homers against the Colorado Rockies.
Rushing has played in just eight games so far this season, but that hasnât stopped him from putting together the best offensive stretch of his MLB career. His two homers against the Rockies from the nine spot Monday were his sixth and seventh of the season, tying him for the MLB lead among catchers with the Athleticsâ Shea Langeliers.
He has started seven games this season, and has homered in five of them.
âHeâs performing,â manager Dave Roberts said. âItâs good to see him smile. Heâs really hard on himself and expects a lot, but, man, heâs off to a tremendous start.â

Roberts has been vocal about Rushingâs acceptance of his role heading into a season where heâll likely serve exclusively as a backup, and the second-year catcher seems to be adjusting just fine.
âDaltonâs in a good spot right now,â Roberts said. âI want him to understand his role as a backup catcher, what that entails. Really learn the pitchers, learn a swing that works for playing a couple times a week. Heâs used to playing a lot more.
âJust still maturing. Itâs not easy to not play every day when youâre used to that. I think that he grew last year and I like where heâs at right now. âŠIdeally youâre looking for him to get 500 at-bats this year to continue to evolve and catch innings, but looking at the depth chart, I think youâd still choose to be a major league player.â

While Rushingâs start to the season has been nothing short of fantastic, itâll be near impossible for him to break into an everyday role with the Dodgers this season barring injury.
Heâs blocked at both first base and catcher by perennial All-Stars in Freddie Freeman and Will Smith, and the designated hitter role is occupied by the best player on the planet nightly.
Rushing previously played outfield in the minor leagues, but Roberts stated outfield wasnât an option for him prior to the season.
âOutfield is not on the table,â Roberts said.
The Dodgers may have to change their tune if Rushing continues to hit like this, though, as keeping a red hit bat like his out of the lineup should be out of the question.
The Dodgersâ next three games come against the San Francisco Giants, and Rushing could potentially start in any of them. All three games come against right-handed starters, and Smith is sure to need some rest as the Dodgers trudge through 13 consecutive games without a rest day.
LAâs first matchup against the Giants in 2026 comes Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. PT.
