Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed Shohei Ohtani will still be able to make his start after getting plunked Monday.
Ohtani wore a 94 mph sinker off of his right shoulder in the first inning, inducing a loud reaction from the reigning MVP. Roberts stated Ohtani just has a bruise and will still be able to pitch when his turn comes in the series finale Wednesday, though heâs glad the star gets a little extra rest.
âIâm happy heâs not pitching tomorrow,â Roberts said, per the California Postâs Jack Harris.
Ohtani stayed in the game for the Dodgers following the hit by pitch, and eventually scored. He went 0-for-4 on the day, though it didnât matter much as the Dodgers cruised to a 4-0 win on the back of eight scoreless innings from Justin Wrobleski.

It should go without saying that Ohtani is the Dodgersâ most important player, as he has won the NL MVP unanimously in both of his full seasons with the Dodgers.
Despite a slow start this season, Ohtani has a .943 OPS with five home runsâwhich ties him with Andy Pages for the most on the teamâand 10 RBIs. The first inning HBP also extended his on-base streak to 47 games, which is the longest streak by a Japanese-born player in MLB history and is just 11 games shy of Duke Sniderâs Dodgers and National League record of 58-games.
On top of his offense, the two-way star has been a force on the mound early in the 2026 season.
Heâs pitched 12 innings across two outings this season, striking out eight batters and allowing a staggeringly low .119 opposing batting average. He hasnât allowed an earned run all season, though an unearned run came across in his most recent outing.
Ohtaniâs start comes Wednesday against the New York Mets, marking the final game of their three-game set in Los Angeles. The right-hander will face Clay Holmes on Jackie Robinson Day, who has historically had some success against the Dodgers.
Holmes has allowed 10 hits in 40 at-bats against the Dodgers, logging nine strikeouts in the process.
Ohtani should have a good day against the Mets, as theyâve had extreme struggles on offense since Juan Soto landed on the injured list. Theyâve failed to score a run in three of their last four games, and will have to overcome their difficulties against Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Tuesdayâs game before facing Ohtani.
The second game of the Dodgersâ series against the Mets comes Monday at 7:10 p.m. PT.
