David Lynch: Five Key Takeaways After 3-2 Loss At Old Trafford
Liverpoolâs 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford has become another uncomfortable marker in a season David Lynch described as âpretty disastrousâ. Speaking on his YouTube podcast, Lynch framed the result as part of a wider argument around Arne Slotâs position, saying âevery game remaining in this campaign is going to be judged through the prism of where you stand on Anna slot and what you think about his future.â
Lynch made clear that Fenway Sports Group appear settled on their position, stating that âFenway Sports Group have very much made their mind upâ and that âthey absolutely want to back him.â Yet he also insisted that discussion around Slotâs future should not be treated as hysteria, adding, âI donât think it makes you knee-jerk to talk about whether that is the right decision or not.â
That is the tension now surrounding Liverpool. A manager who won the Premier League in 2024/25 is still expected to remain, but the 3-2 Manchester United defeat showed, in Lynchâs words, âsome good, a lot of bad.â
Lynch did not present the Manchester United defeat as a simple case for dismissal. He acknowledged that Liverpool fought back from 2-0 down, which he saw as evidence that âthe players donât seem to have given up on the manager.â That matters, because Liverpool could have folded at Old Trafford, especially with key attacking absences.
He admitted his own expectations were low, saying, âI did not have high expectationsâ and noting that Liverpool had been âpoor all seasonâ. Injuries were also part of the mitigation. Lynch asked, âwhereâs the goals going to come from in this teamâ, with Hugo Ekitike, and among those mentioned as absent.

There was also the wider Champions League picture. Lynch said Liverpool were still âpretty much nailed on to get in the Champions Leagueâ, citing Optaâs projection of a â97% chanceâ despite the Manchester United defeat.
The problem, as Lynch repeatedly stressed, was the performance level. He called Liverpoolâs first half âabysmalâ and said they were âso lacking in intensity.â His strongest criticism centred on how easily Manchester United exposed Liverpoolâs structure.
He said United were âsnapping into challengesâ while Liverpool looked âlike a rabbit in the headlights.â That phrase captured the anxiety of the afternoon, with Liverpool appearing open, reactive and underprepared.
Lynch was especially concerned by the midfield and defensive shape. âThe organization doesnât look right,â he said, adding that âthe midfield looks empty too frequentlyâ and that âat the back they look so easy to get at.â He also argued that Manchester Unitedâs plan was obvious, saying Liverpool âjust walked onto the punch.â
His broader worry was whether new signings alone can repair this. âHow good are these signings going to be?â he asked, noting that Liverpool had already paid â100 odd million for Alexander Isac and 100 odd million for Florian Vietzâ without fixing the team.
Lynch reserved specific criticism for Alexis Mac Allister, saying his selection had âbeen a problem for so much of this season.â He pointed to involvement in two Manchester United goals and argued that Mac Allister has been âjust bypassed so easily in midfield.â
He also raised Curtis Jones as a better solution, saying, âCurtis Jones for me would have been a better solution over the course of this season than Alexis Mallister.â Lynch added that his understanding is Jones is âvery likelyâ to leave because he wants more regular football.
On Jeremie Frimpong, Lynch was blunt. He said it was ânot a good game from him,â citing âtwo out of 10 ground jewels wonâ and âzero chances created.â His verdict was that he does not âever foresee that he will be a starter for Liverpool.â

In the end, Lynch said he would âmaybe nudge towards making the change,â while accepting Liverpool appear unlikely to do so. For Manchester United, this was a damaging result inflicted on a rival. For Liverpool, it was another performance that left the Slot debate louder, sharper and harder to ignore.
