Entering the final year of his rookie contract, tackle Dawand Jones agreed to a revised contract with the Cleveland Browns.
Originally, Jones was scheduled to make $3.674 million in 2026, after meeting escalators in his rookie contract. Now, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Jones is slated to make $1.5 million, including $1.145 million guaranteed.
It's a deal that helps both sides for different reasons. For the team, they free up a small chunk of money in cap space, while Jones receives some guaranteed money next season. None of the money in his current deal would have been guaranteed otherwise.
Jones will now head into the 2026 season in a "prove it" situation, looking to earn a second contract in the NFL.
At one point, 2023 fourth-round pick looked poised to be part of the Browns' future along the offensive line. During his rookie campaign he showed some promise filling in at right tackle for more than 700 snaps, earning some respectable marks from PFF for his pass blocking ability.
That first season was ultimately cut short by a knee injury that required surgery, but his successes paved the way for Jones to become the top swing tackle option for Cleveland one season later.
In 2024, he split time at right tackle and left tackle across 10 games, but once again suffered a season-ending injury, breaking his fibula in Week 11. The Browns moved Jones to left tackle in 2025 after he recovered from the broken leg and slimmed himself down to be in better playing shape.
The experiment only lasted two games before he was moved back to his more natural spot at right tackle, then a torn LCL ended his season yet again.
If Jones can prove to stay healthy, he could certainly still carve out a role for himself in Cleveland. However, general manager Andrew Berry just oversaw a thorough offensive line rebuild this offseason, which culminated in drafting Utah tackle Spencer Fano No. 9 overall in the NFL Draft.
Other draft additions included Florida tackle Austin Barber in the third round and Alabama center Parker Brailsford. Berry had previously signed former ' center and guard , former guard and traded for former tackle , who are all expected to be starters.
