Dawgs on top of SEC. Georgia baseball wins regular season title

Georgia baseball is the SEC regular season champions with still four games to go before the conference tournament.

The Bulldogs wrapped up their first SEC title since 2008 by turning back LSU 13-8 on Saturday night May 9, leaving too big a lead in the standings for Texas or Texas A&M to make up.

Texas lost at Tennessee Saturday while Texas A&M lost twice at Ole Miss, including 6-5 in game two.

Georgia then clinched the SEC title 47 minutes later when Matt Scott struck out Edward Yamin IV to end the game.

Georgia third baseman Michael O’Shaughnessy blasted a grand slam in the second inning as the Bulldogs put up eight runs and added a solo shot in the eighth for his 17th homer of the season.

Georgia (40-11, 20-6 SEC) won its eight straight game and seventh in a row in SEC play.

The SEC title comes in coach Wes Johnson’s third Georgia season.

He won a College World Series as pitching coach at LSU in 2023, but this is Johnson’s first SEC regular season title since 2016 when he was a Mississippi State assistant coach.

Georgia has done it with another power-hitting lineup.

The Bulldogs lead the nation with 137 home runs.

Jordy Oriach’s two-run homer in the second added to that total Saturday and the Bulldogs got a run-scoring double from Daniel Jackson and an RBI single from Oriach in the fifth.

Georgia added two more in the sixth on a Tre Phelps RBI ground out and a Jackson RBI single.

LSU cut the lead to five Jackson Stephens gave up a three-run home run in the eighth inning to pinch-hitter Chris Stanfield.

LSU issued 13 walks in the game, three more than Georgia.

Paul Farley (6-1) got the win with 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing 3 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

LSU (29-23, 9-17) could find itself missing the NCAA Tournament a year after winning the national title.

As the No. 1 seed, Georgia will have a double bye in the SEC Tournament in Hoover.

It will open play Thursday May 21 against the No. 8, 9 or 16 seed.
