Apr. 17—Jalen Haynes, a 6-foot-8, 250-pound forward who has attended four schools in five years, announced his commitment to the Dayton Flyers on Thursday, April 16. Joe Tipton, of On3.com, reported the news.
The Haynes news broke late Thursday, two hours after former Ole Miss and Kentucky guard Travis Perry announced his commitment to Dayton.
Haynes, who's from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Perry, of Eddyville, Ky., are the first transfers of the spring to pick Dayton.
Haynes graduated from high school six years ago and has played three seasons and sat out two seasons during his college career.
Last season, Haynes was on the Cincinnati Bearcats roster, but he did not play in a game after undergoing knee surgery in October.
Jalen Haynes is a beast," UC coach Wes Miller told the Cincinnati Enquirer in April 2025 after his commitment. "He brings a level of physicality to our frontcourt that will translate immediately in the Big 12. He plays with a high motor, he attacks the backboards and he values winning. Offensively, he brings a diverse and valuable skill set to our team. He can really score, but he also has the ability to generate offensive opportunities for his teammates.
In the 2024-25 season, Haynes averaged 14.1 points and 6.4 rebounds for George Mason. He made the Atlantic 10 Conference first team in a season that saw the Patriots tie Virginia Commonwealth for the regular-season championship.
In a 67-59 victory against Dayton at UD Arena on Jan. 15, 2025, Haynes scored 12 points. He's the first former Atlantic 10 Conference player to transfer to Dayton.
At George Mason as a transfer in the 2023-24 season, Haynes redshirted. He was denied a waiver for immediate eligibility as a multiple-time transfer. The NCAA changed the rule in April 2024 and now multiple-time transfers are immediately eligible.
Haynes played his freshman season at Virginia Tech in 2021-22, playing a total of 25 minutes in nine games. He then transferred to East Tennessee State, where he averaged 14.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in 28.7 minutes per game.
Haynes played at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale. He averaged 18.4 points as a senior in the 2019-20 season and led his team to an appearance in the 6A state final.
In the 2020-21 season, Haynes spent a post-graduate year at Montverde Academy near Orlando, Fla. He averaged 20.2 points and 10.6 rebounds. He committed to Virginia Tech in April 2021, picking the Hokies over Boston College, Mississippi State, Central Florida and East Tennessee State.
With the addition of Haynes and Perry, here's what Dayton's 2026-27 roster looks like at the moment:
