NEW ORLEANS — A heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to E.D. White last year didn’t sit well with Patrick Taylor’s 8 returning starters, and that ending fueled their 29-win campaign this spring.
“From day one of practice, they all came back better than they were last year. They all worked really, really hard in the offseason,” Reine said.
Second-year head coach Lance Reine felt the Tigers weren’t mentally prepared for that moment, but this year they were.
In Saturday’s quarterfinal bout with St. Charles Catholic, Patrick Taylor beat the Comets 5-0 in Laplace. The win punched the Tigers’ ticket to the semi-final round for the first time in program history.
“It’s huge. We’re playing against some of the elite teams in the state, and we belong there, and that’s the biggest message I had to make sure that they understood. We belong there, and we’re supposed to be there because of the work that we put in. And they’re talented enough to beat anybody,” Reine said.
Patrick Taylor’s lone senior, Ashtyn Rogers, was huge in the quarterfinal win, striking out 15 and bringing her season total to 295.
“She’s nearing 300 strikeouts on the season, nearing 800 for her career. So, she’s been really consistent over the entire time of her high school career, but these last two seasons she’s become more of a dominant player, and that just speaks to all of her hard work,” Reine said.
That work will be tested this weekend in Sulphur against top-ranked Vandebilt Catholic.
The Terriers have won back-to-back Division II select state titles with 16 championship wins in program history.
“Vandebilt has the most state championships of any team, the most appearances in the state championship game of any team. And here we are, just the first time through, and little Patrick Taylor, but we know what we’re capable of. We’re ready for it. We know what we’re capable of, and I know we’re going to go out there and compete really hard . We’re not going there for any other reason but to win it all,” Reine said.
