The Kansas City Chiefs hired former NFL running back DeMarco Murray this offseason, who was previously coaching at the University of Oklahoma as running backs coach since 2020. The 38-year-old spoke with the Chiefs media team recently about the opportunity to work with Brashard Smith.
"There's going to be challenges, but I'm looking forward to it, and I know he (Smith) hasn't had a lot of time at the position. But again, everyone that I've talked to in this building, they're extremely excited about him, his work ethic, his versatility, and again, what he can do when the ball is in his hands." said Murray, "I think for him, not having the background of being a running back, that's where my job comes in, very important to spend some extra time with him, and again, just develop him, from eyes to hands to feet and things of that nature. He's already a really good athlete. So again, there's just some things to add to his tool belt to help him, you know, become a better running back."
Murray retired from the NFL after seven years, accumulating 7,174 career rushing yards and 49 career rushing touchdowns. He earned three Pro Bowl seasons and, in 2014, was named Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year while with the Dallas Cowboys.
During his rookie season, Smith contributed with 151 yards on the ground but proved to be a versatile threat in the passing game.
