According to the New York Post, Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, Big Ten and Southeastern Conference.
Court documents show the Lions star sued the three entities in Los Angeles County on Monday over allegations that they have been using his name, image and likeness without properly compensating him for it.
Williams began his college career at Ohio State before finishing up with a breakout season at Alabama.
"To date, Williams has received no fair compensation from Defendants for the full commercial value of his name, image, and likeness,” Williams’ lawsuit states, per the New York Post. “Defendants continuously financially benefit from Jameson Williams’ name, image and likeness rights, while also doing so without providing him with just compensation.”
Williams is formally suing for violation of the Cartwright Act, violation of the Unfair Practices Act, violation of the Sherman Antitrust and violation of the Lanham Act.
“Plaintiff received less — zero — than he otherwise would have received for the use of his name, image, and likeness in a competitive marketplace, and was thus damaged, and seeks to recover those damages,” Williams’ lawsuit states.
Williams caught 65 passes for 1,117 yards and seven scores last season. The 6-foot-1, 182-pound receiver ranked tied-ninth in NFL receiving yardage last season. In his four-year NFL career, Williams has caught 148 passes for 2,513 yards and 17 scores in 50 regular-season games.
Across his two seasons at Ohio State, Williams caught 15 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns. At Alabama in 2021, Williams had 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns.
