Dexter Lawrence has officially joined the Cincinnati Bengals after passing his physical. The Bengals traded their first-round pick to the New York Giants for Lawrence, who signed a one-year contract extension through 2028.
The Cincinnati Bengals made their acquisition of Dexter Lawrence official on April 19 after the three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle passed his physical at Paycor Stadium.
Lawrence, 28 years old, signed a one-year contract extension with the Bengals upon signing his contract. He is now under contract with the club through the 2028 season.
Cincinnati agreed to a trade with the New York Giants for Lawrence on April 18. The Bengals gave the Giants their first-round pick, No. 10 overall, in this yearâs draft in exchange for Lawrence. He will make $28 million a year in Cincinnati, according to ESPNâs Adam Schefter.
âThe opportunity to add a player of Dexterâs ability was too good to pass up thanks to the commitment by Mr. Brown, Katie Blackburn, Troy Blackburn, Paul Brown and our player personnel staff,â said Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin. âDexter fits the vision we have on our defense and will also elevate others around him. We are confident in Dexter and canât wait to see the positive effects he and the other players we have acquired this offseason have on our football team. We are excited to turn to the draft and our remaining picks to further enhance our team.â
After seven seasons with the Giants, Lawrence was looking for a new place to continue his career. The Giants and Lawrence were unable to come to an agreement on a long-term extension, and Cincinnati jumped on the opportunity to add a proven talent to its roster.
Lawrence immediately upgrades the Bengalsâ defense at a position of need.

The Bengalsâ trade for Lawrence is the first time the franchise has traded away a first-round pick for a current player.
In 109 games for the Giants, Lawrence recorded 341 tackles, 103 quarterback hits and 30.5 sacks. The Bengals are making Lawrence available in a news conference on April 20 at 10:40 a.m. ET at Paycor Stadium.
