Thomas was designated for assignment last week to clear space for the club to promote top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt.
Thomas had been one of the Diamondbacksâ top prospects and considered a big part of their future as recently as a couple of years ago. But he struggled to be a productive hitter, and the Diamondbacks, whose offense has been slumping badly in recent weeks, opted to move on.
The cost savings in the deal are not insignificant for a Diamondbacks team that is relatively close to the first luxury tax threshold.
The Venezuelan-born Requena, 17, has yet to play a professional game. He signed with the Dodgers as an international free agent in January. According to Baseball America, he has a âpower-over-hit offensive game,â adding that his âraw power and plus armâ are his best tools and profile well in right field.
