The Arizona Diamondbacks were in a bit of a pickle when they learned that Pavin Smith needed surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow.
The left-handed hitting first baseman is on the 60-day injured list.
Smith's long-term absence left Arizona thin at the corner infield spot, since a veteran they signed during the offseason also got hurt in April.
"The Diamondbacks needed a platoon partner for the left-handed-hitting Pavin Smith, so signing Carlos Santana made a lot of sense for Arizona," FanSided's Zachary Rotman wrote Monday. "Unfortunately, Santana didn't hit at all, going just 2-for-24 with eight strikeouts before landing on the IL in early April. He has played seven games on a rehab assignment but has gone just 3-for-25 in those contests."

Santana, 40, is working his way back from a right groin strain. But the emergence of other players on Arizona's roster could leave him without much playing time when he returns.
"As if Santana not hitting isn't bad enough, while he was on the IL (alongside Pavin Smith), Ildemaro Vargas has taken over the first base duties, and he's currently third in the majors with a .341 batting average," Rotman added. "Even if Vargas slows down to the point where the Diamondbacks want to bench him at some point, the organization still has Smith, who should be back before the deadline, and even Tyler Locklear, one of their most exciting prospects, healthy in Triple-A."
The last season in which Santana performed better than a league-average hitter was in 2024 with the Minnesota Twins, when he connected for 23 home runs with a 109 OPS+.
Father Time may finally have caught up with the former Cleveland Guardians All-Star. If his early-season numbers are indicative of what he can offer the Diamondbacks the rest of the way, it makes little sense for the NL West club to keep him around.
