LAFC held scoreless in frustrating draw with Colorado Rapids
The Orlando Magic lost to the Detroit Pistons 30-3 in a crucial third quarter, resulting in a tied series at 1-1. Despite a strong start, the Magic struggled offensively and committed multiple turnovers.
In Game 2 of their first-round matchup between the Pistons and the Magic, Orlando seemed poised to yet again shock everyone, heading into halftime in a 46-46 tie.
They had already taken home-court advantage from the Pistons, beating them 112-101 on Sunday night to be the only lower-seeded team to win their Game 1. Questions started to arise about Detroit's scoring outside of Cade Cunningham, if Orlando's physicality and size was too much for the Pistons, the Eastern Conference's top seed.
Then in just one quarter, those questions seemed to go away. Detroit went on a 30-3 run through the first seven minutes and 40 seconds of the third quarter, turning a tie game into a dominant lead fitting of a No. 1 seed and fueling Detroit to tie the series at 1-1.
Imagine being on the other end of that scoring run, going 5-for-17 from the field, 2-for-8 from three-point range, committing seven turnovers and letting your best chance to seize a commanding 2-0 lead as the eighth seed literally slip away.
"I think we just got a little disorganized offensively, and they started to try to speed us up with ball pressure, and just not letting us get into what we try and get into," Magic forward Paolo Banchero said.
Banchero himself felt that disorganization, going 0-for-5 from the field in that third quarter to finish with 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting, a far cry from his 23-point, nine-rebound Game 1 with much better efficiency.
"But I think it was moreso us ... not being on the same page to start the quarter, and they just took full advantage. I think we just tried to get into some things that they blew up."
There were multiple defensive plays made by the Pistons that led to offense, like Cade Cunningham intercepting a pass to Franz Wagner and taking it all the way for an and-one layup, Ausar Thompson picking Jalen Suggs' pocket for a dunk, and Isaiah Stewart meeting Suggs at the rim for a block that sent Little Caesars Arena into a frenzy.
The Pistons defeated the Magic 30-3 in the third quarter, ultimately winning the game and tying the series at 1-1.
The Magic struggled significantly, going 5-for-17 from the field and committing seven turnovers during the third quarter.
Paolo Banchero is a forward for the Magic, and he mentioned that the team became disorganized offensively, which contributed to their poor performance.
The Magic's Game 1 victory was significant as they were the only lower-seeded team to win, taking home-court advantage from the Pistons.

For a series between two physical teams, whatever advantage Orlando had in that category after Game 1 was taken away. Detroit answered back with an exclamation point, turning an Orlando offense that looked efficient in Game 1 back down to earth as the Magic shot 33 percent from the field and 25 percent from three.
"I think we responded well to the physicality, I really do. I think they were doing just as much grabbing and holding, physical plays at the rim. That's the game," Magic head coach Jamahl Mosely said. "This is what it was going to be from the beginning of the series. We embraced that and we accept it."

Orlando's already dealt with their backs against the wall. After losing their first Play-In Tournament game to the 76ers, with their season on the line, they dominated the Hornets to setup this first-round matchup. And the Pistons know what to expect for the rest of this series.
"This is a good team we're playing against, you know? I mean, if that team is healthy most of the season, they're not an eighth-seeded team, like they're a very talented, very good basketball team," Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.
While many people didn't see this series going longer than five games, Orlando taking one from the Pistons on their own home floor has turned this series on it's head, making Games 3 and 4 must-win for the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
"Going on the road, you'd love to go 2-0. That would be an ideal, perfect world. We came here, we got one," Suggs said. "So going back home, knowing what the crowd's going to be like, knowing we have the energy on our side; from that standpoint, really coming out and taking advantage of that from the first punch."
