The UEFA Champions League has eliminated the away goals rule starting from the 2021-22 tournament. Ties after 180 minutes will now proceed directly to extra time and penalties if necessary.
Soccer fans who don't like doing math, rejoice! Away goals are no longer a concern in the UEFA Champions League.
Europe's top club competition scrapped the away goals rule for the 2021-22 tournament, which would use goals scored on the road as a tiebreaker in the two-legged knockout ties.
Now, knockout round matches tied on aggregate after 180 minutes will go straight to extra time – and then penalties, if necessary – to decide the winner.
The away goal rule had its supporters but was always controversial as teams would often play entirely differently whether at home or on the road, but the tiebreaker could result in thrilling swings at the very end of the two-legged ties.
