Itâs desperation time for the Philadelphia Flyers, as they look to fight off elimination on Saturday in Game 4 against the Carolina Hurricanes. Down 3-0, the Flyers have just one life left in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs before their season comes to an end.
The Flyers are going to have to put forward their best effort on Saturday â thatâs a given. But even then, will it be enough? The Hurricanes are a well-rounded team with a strong offense, a balanced defensive corps with the speed and aggressive checking teams need to suffocate an opposing team. Not to mention, Rod BrindâAmour is one heck of a coach.
It was known from the start that this would be a challenging series for the Flyers. They need to have their best game on Saturday.
In these situations, down 3-0, you hear the word desperation. Oftentimes, players and coaches alike recognize that teams start to go all out with nothing to lose, playing freely and trying to do anything to scrap back into the series.
Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet doesnât want to use the word desperate here. Instead, he wants to use the word determination, describing what he wants to see from his team on Saturday.
âThis is a do-or-die game,â said Tocchet. âHow do you go into this game making these guys play relaxed, but also play desperate? I donât like to use the word desperate much. I like the word determined. Can we be more determined tomorrow night? Yeah, I think we can.â
So, what do the Flyers need to show to have a more âdeterminedâ effort on Saturday?

This is the Flyersâ 10th playoff game of the season. So, for the 10th time, âstay out of the penalty boxâ is one of the Flyersâ keys to success. After giving 9 power-play opportunities in Game 3, there should be an increased emphasis on staying out of the box in Game 4.
The Flyers need to play with determination and deliver their best effort to have a chance against the Hurricanes.
The Flyers are down 3-0 in the series and face elimination in Game 4.
Rod Brind'Amour is the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday, and it is a must-win for the Flyers.

Once again, the Flyers will be without Noah Cates and Owen Tippett, who played pivotal roles in the Flyersâ penalty-killing success in the first series and all season at that. That puts guys like Garnet Hathaway and Carl Grundstrom in critical penalty-killing positions.
Weâve said it many times in this series: You cannot give this Hurricanes team extra chances. That includes power plays. Stay out of the box.
While speaking about chances, the Flyers will have few. When they get them, the Flyers have to get bodies in front of the net. I mentioned it in the game preview, but Game 3 proved that Freddie Andersen is beatable. Now, the Flyers have to make things a little harder on the Carolina netminder.
Traffic in front will make it a little more difficult for Andersen to track pucks. Itâll also have sticks ready for second-chance opportunities, something Andersen allowed a little more of in Game 3 than the prior two.
The Flyers have to apply pressure on Andersen and get him a little less comfortable. Crowd just outside of the blue makes it hard on Andersen, who is making goaltending look easy this postseason.
Lastly, the Flyers need their stars to step up. Once again, the output of star players like Travis Konecny, Matvei Michkov, Tyson Foerster, and even Christian Dvorak. I still give Foerster a bit of slack, considering his return from injury just before the postseason. Still, the Flyers have been lacking scoring from some of their most reliable players.
If theyâre going to have a chance, the Flyers need their stars to make an impact.
