Last week was a whirlwind for NBA coaching legend Doc Rivers. After getting fired by the Milwaukee Bucks following their disastrous regular season, Rivers revealed a major announcement during his appearance on Friday's episode of "The Bill Simmons Podcast."
"I told my coaches, Iām done. I loved coaching. Loved it. I had a lot of success at it, had way more ups than downs," Rivers told Simmons. "But at the end of the day, Iāve given 47 years or whatever, I donāt even know how old I am ⦠with no off time. I just wanted a break. I want to get away. The grandkids and just life in general, man."
While Rivers hasn't officially announced his retirement from coaching yet, it sounds like that part of his career is over.
"Right now, I can tell you, Bill, I think it was time, so Iād be surprised if I coached another game, Iāll put it that way," Rivers added.
Rivers isĀ 64 and has spent over four decades in the NBA. After a successfulĀ 13-year career as an All-Star point guard, he enjoyed a 27-year career as a head coach for the Orlando Magic, , , and Milwaukee Bucks.

Rivers had his longest tenure with the Celtics, where he spent nine years and led them to a championship in 2008.
He was one of the most successful coaches in league history, winning NBA Coach of the Year during his first season as a head coach and racking up overĀ 1,300 wins in the regular season and playoffs combined. However, his teams developed a reputation for falling short in the postseason, which damaged his reputation somewhat over the final decade of his career.
Unfortunately for Rivers, his coaching career ended on a down note this year with the injury-plagued Bucks losing 50 gamesĀ -- the second-most of his career. If this is the end of his coaching career, however, he still goes down as one of the league's best coaches of the 21st century.
