One of the big questions surrounding the team right now is about whether or not Shohei Ohtani should be able to hit while also pitching.
"Obviously, having him do both duties, theory, practice, it's great," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, according to Dodgers beat reporter Sonja Chen of MLB.com. "But how sustainable is it without kind of taking a little bit off his plate a little bit? That's the question, and it's not an exact science."
But can Ohtani do both effectively? He's proven himself time and again at the plate. Dodgers fans are used to seeing Ohtani just come up and deliver base hit after base hit for the team.
Yet, there does have to be some consideration about his health. It's a long MLB season and the Dodgers have 100-plus games left. And, let's not forget how many games the Dodgers might get into during a postseason run.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman is taking a cautious approach when it comes to Ohtani. Friedman also is thinking of his star player's future, too.
"Obviously, '24 he didn't pitch, '25 he didn't pitch in the beginning of the year, and this year, he has expectations of going wire to wire and hopefully through what is a very long October," Friedman said. "So for us, it's about observing and communicating with him and trying to figure out when it makes sense."
Roberts is very aware that Ohtani is about two years removed from having surgery. He's also weighing just how much action can Ohtani see on the mound, too.
"I think he's just smart enough to know that last year is different than this year, even given that ... he's two years removed [from surgery], which is a good thing," Roberts said.
The situation around Ohtani pitching this season will be worth watching.
