The Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcántara is off to a strong start this season. He has already thrown the first complete game of the year and is beginning to look like his pre-injury self. Alcántara could have had two complete games, but his manager pulled him in the ninth inning.
“Sandy Alcantara took the mound in the top of the ninth inning with a 2–0 lead, aiming to become the fourth pitcher in Marlins franchise history to record back-to-back complete-game shutouts. After surrendering a double and a walk, manager Clayton McCullough made his most controversial move of the young season, removing his ace in favor of Anthony Bender,” Fish on First’s Kevin Barral wrote.
Alcántara is nearing the end of his contract, and the key question is whether Miami will be willing to trade him.
“For the past few years, the Marlins have been shopping pitching almost constantly, even guys with multiple years of club control. Despite persistent rumors, Sandy Alcantara has usually been off the table, for different reasons at different times. As time goes on and we move closer to the end of his contract, the Marlins will have to make a decision, with still several ways for the situation to play out,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald wrote.
If Miami does make Alcántara available, expect the Los Angeles Dodgers to be aggressive in pursuing him.

“Sandy Alcántara is back to ace form. He has a 2.67 ERA in four starts so far this season. If the Marlins are open to dealing him, they are going to get a haul,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.
Adding Alcántara would make an already elite Dodgers rotation even stronger. Not only would he bolster the staff, but Los Angeles could also consider moving to a six-man rotation to provide additional rest for its pitchers.
The Dodgers are already one of the best teams in baseball, but acquiring Alcántara would elevate them even further. They would also be taking on his $56 million contract. A former Cy Young winner, Alcántara has the potential to contend for the award again this season.
