Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Roki Sasaki has struggled all season, and the Los Angeles Timesā Bill Plaschke believes he belongs back in the bullpen.
Through four starts, Sasaki has a 6.11 ERA and has failed to throw more than five innings. Heās had issues with control, having walked 12 batters in just 17.2 innings. Things werenāt always like this, though.
After returning from a right shoulder impingement late last season, the Dodgers moved Sasaki into the bullpen. He found his greatest success in relief, allowing just one run through 12.2 innings out of the bullpen, and was a go-to high-leverage arm throughout the Dodgersā World Series charge.
He looked fantastic as the Dodgersā makeshift closer while Tanner Scott sat on the sidelines during the postseason, but after the season ended, the Dodgers moved him back to the starting rotation. That, Plaschke believes, was a mistake.
Roki Sasaki has a 6.11 ERA and has not pitched more than five innings in any of his four starts this season.
Analysts argue that Sasaki should return to the bullpen because he had success there last season, allowing only one run in 12.2 innings.
Roki Sasaki has walked 12 batters in just 17.2 innings this season.
In relief last season, Roki Sasaki was highly effective, allowing just one run and serving as a key high-leverage pitcher during the Dodgers' World Series run.

āTheyāve got to put him back to where he found his greatest success, where his lack of a variety of pitches will not hurt him, where he can throw 100 mph for 20 pitches and save the team with his strength,ā Plaschke wrote. āAs last October showed everyone, the bullpen is where he belongs.ā

One thing Sasaki lacks which other starting pitchers across the league have is a diverse pitch mix. The young right-hander began working on a third and fourth pitch during the offseason, but still used his fastball and splitter more than 75% of the time.
The issue with Sasaki having so few pitches is the battersā ability to see his stuff and adjust by the second or third time through the lineup. His limited arsenal makes him a perfect fit for the bullpen.
Plaschke didnāt just use hs pitch mix as proof, though, he also provided Sasakiās statistics through his first two innings of his outings against the rest of the innings heās pitched.
In the first two innings he has pitched across all of his outings this season, Sasaki is yet to allow an earned run. All 12 of the runs heās allowed this season have come after the second inning.
As a reliever with a one-to-two inning runway, Sasaki is a prime candidate to trot out of the pen whenever the Dodgers need to get out of a pinch.
Despite the multitude of evidence in favor of moving Sasaki to the bullpen, the Dodgers donāt seem willing to quit on their project just yet.
The Dodgers have some reinforcements coming to their rotation soon with Blake Snell on the mend, but manager Dave Roberts said Sasaki would remain a starter whenever that time comes.
WhenĀ BlakeĀ comes back, RokiĀ will not be in the bullpen,ā Roberts said.
