'Don't jinx it': Xander Schauffele finds confidence, starts strong at PGA Championship
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. â After a poor finish that wasnât up to his standards last week, Xander Schauffele limped into the 108th PGA Championship and was asked during his press conference on Tuesday to rate his confidence level compared to two years ago when he left with the Wanamaker Trophy in his possession.
âIt's significantly lower, obviously. I finished close to last place last week,â he said.
Then came the butâŠâI'm actually feeling kind of good, surprisingly. It's one of those things where I tried my absolute hardest and almost came in last place last week, and that's just sometimes how a bad day in the office goes, but still beats being inside,â he said. âYeah, I'm looking forward to this week and sort of the rest of this year.â
Schauffele was then asked whether heâd found something in his game that had buoyed his confidence.

âI don't want to jinx it, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, confidence is a tricky thing. I didn't have a whole lot last week, was a little bit in my head on what I was capable of doing,â he said. âI actually did a few things pretty decent last week, surprisingly. Hopefully I can kind of drag a little bit of that into this week.â
It may have come kicking and screaming but he dragged enough out of his game to shoot 2-under par 68 on Thursday at Aronimink Golf Club and sit one stroke off the lead in the first round of the PGA Championship.
âYeah, it's always nervy playing in a major, so nice to get off to a good start for sure. I made three birdies in the first four holes and was feeling pretty good,â Schauffele said. âThen started to play a lot worse golf for the next six holes. Then got a little bit better again. So I got the full experience today.â
Schauffele, 32, started on the back nine and rolled in those three early birdies, including a 14-footer at No. 10. He sprinkled three bogeys on the card but made one birdie coming in, sticking his tee shot at the 175-yard fifth hole to seven feet. Schauffele has trusted his Odyssey Versa putter that looks like a tuning fork for several years and while he hasnât enjoyed the best putting season, he was encouraged by having putting coach Derek Uyeda here this week for the first three days.
âJust tried to get some start lines and some reads back on track,â Schauffele said. âWhen you're playing putts, you know, 6-foot to 10-foot putts that are breaking anywhere from one cup to three feet. There's a lot of windows and speeds you can hit 'em, and you've just got to get confident and comfortable.â
When Schauffele won this title two years ago he raced to a record-low start of 62. His 68 isnât in the same ballpark but it was solid. Asked to name what highlight from his round should make ESPN, he repled, âYou got me here. I have no idea.â
Did he hit any good shots? âYeah, I did,â he said with a smile. âI had some good shots. I was actually pretty happy with my putt -- ESPN would never show this, but internally I hit it over the green on 8, and I was leaking some oil, and I was able to lag that to two feet up and over and around and down with a cross-wind. So in my mind, that was a really big moment for me.â
Bigger moments and highlight-reel worthy shots may still be to come.
