Doriane Pin has made history as the first woman to pilot a Mercedes F1 car, completing her maiden test at Silverstone. The 22-year-old French driver, known as 'Pocket Rocket,' logged 76 laps in the W12 E Performance chassis.
F1 Academy phenom Doriane Pin just traded her junior machinery for something with a lot more bite. Just months after dominating the grid to become the 2025 F1 Academy Champion, the 22-year-old Frenchwoman took a massive step forward in her racing career on Friday, officially completing her maiden Formula 1 test at Silverstone.
Affectionately nicknamed âPocket Rocket,â Pin has confirmed her place in the history books. She is officially the first Frenchwoman to drive modern F1 machinery, and the first female driver ever to pilot a Mercedes F1 car.
For her first drive, the Silver Arrows didnât hand Pin just any test chassis. They strapped her into the W12 E Performance, the exact V6 hybrid car that Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas used to secure the teamâs 2021 World Constructorsâ Championship.
Running on the 2.639-kilometer Silverstone National Circuit layout, Pin successfully logged 76 laps, accumulating a total of 200 kilometers of seat time.
âDriving an F1 car for the first time today was unreal,â Pin shared in a press release. âThe W12 is obviously really different from the other cars Iâve been able to drive. Everything is different, bigger, and more powerful. I am glad I was able to build confidence lap after lap and show what I was capable of.â

To prepare for the massive jump in horsepower and downforce, Pin spent countless hours locked in the Mercedes simulator, working directly with the engineering team to map out the W12âs complex steering wheel and braking points.
That behind-the-scenes preparation clearly paid off. Mercedes Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin praised the young driver.
âHer preparation and professionalism has impressed the whole team and she should be really proud of what she has achieved,â Shovlin explained. âShe looked at home from the very first laps and was able to enjoy driving the car on the limit.â
For the Mercedes driver development program, putting Pin in the W12 was a clear signal of intent. Driver Development Advisor Gwen Lagrue said: âIt is always really special for a young driver to drive an F1 car for the very first time. Today, it is even more unique as Doriane is the first ever woman to drive a Mercedes F1 car.
âWe are very proud to show to the next generation of female drivers that driving an F1 car is achievable. I am sure we will see a woman driving in F1 in the coming years and as a team, we would be incredibly proud if we were to achieve that goal with someone in our team. Doriane can certainly act as an inspiration for those following in her wheel tracks as she continues her career and role as Development Driver with our team.â
While she waits for her next opportunity to unleash an F1 car, Pin will remain as a development driver for the team. This includes extensive simulator work, trackside responsibilities at upcoming grands prix, and actively mentoring Payton Westcott, the teamâs current driver for the 2026 F1 Academy season.
âWhilst being a female driver doesnât define me, it was great to show what we can do,â Pin added. âIt was an extremely emotional day.â
