Former Phoenix Suns franchise player Charles Barkley took heat from the Suns' Pacific division rival Draymond Green during an ESPN broadcast on Wednesday, May 6.
Barkley, the Hall of Famer, showed little belief in Green's Golden State Warriors being in a window where they can win moving forward.
"Sports are for young people," Barkley started. "You hope to have a great long career, but nobody wins when they're 37, 38."
The Warriors' best player and two-time NBA MVP, Steph Curry, is 38 years old. Green, a nine-time All-Defense selection, is 36. So is the Warriors' five-time All-NBA wing Jimmy Butler.
"You've said what you've said," Kenny Smith, a two-time NBA Finals champion point guard, said to Barkley. "I want to hear if he believes what you're talking."
Green said: "I mean, I think the goal is just to not look like you in a Houston Rockets uniform. Like, we don't want to —"
"What does that look like?" Smith asked.
Green sighed.
"Did you see it?" Green asked back.
"I'm just asking," Smith replied.
"I saw it," Green said.
Barkley averaged 16.5 points per game, 12.2 rebounds per game and 1.1 steals per game for the Rockets across four seasons to end his career. On one side, Green has never had that many points or rebounds per game in any of his 14 seasons.
On Green's side, both Barkley's points per game and steals per game averages with Houston were significantly fewer than his 23.3 points per game and 1.6 steals per game averages that he posted in the other 12 years of his career.
Barkley also had 48.2/25.3/71.2 shooting splits in Houston. On one hand, those field goal and free throw percentages are higher than Green's career percentages from those two marks. On Green's side, Barkley's shooting splits in Houston are notably worse than Barkley's 55/26.9/73.8 shooting splits prior to his Rockets tenure.
