Womackâs blast led Silver Lake (14-11) to a 5-4 win over Perry-Lecompton in the first round of regionals on Wednesday, May 13. It was Womackâs sixth homer in the team's last seven games.
âCredit to our guys, credit to Drew to just staying in the fight,â Silver Lake head coach Tyler Seele said. âIf we could get it back to the middle of our order, we could have a chance.â
Things were not going well for Silver Lake. They trailed 4-0 as Perry-Lecompton starting pitcher Garrett Metcalfe was on fire. He recorded out after out and Silver Lake stranded runners.
The Eagles did not waver in their confidence. The team scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth inning off of a Dom Monhollon fielder's choice, which led to a Dayne Johnson run.
With the team trailing 4-1, Silver Lake needed a spark in the final inning. Aiden Stricklin kept the game alive with a single, which led to Brady Hogle hitting a ground ball to second base, which the Kaws could not handle.
Silver Lake had runners on first and second base; Kipton Kruger, a freshman, came up clutch. The freshman looped a shot down the right field wall. He scored Stricklin and Hogle to cut the visitorsâ lead to 4-3.
âHe plays beyond his years,â Seele said about Kruger. âIt was a big-time play from him.â

As Kruger stood on second base, Womack had the at-bat of his life. He nailed the home run on the second pitch. He rounded home and was mobbed by his teammates.
âIt was awesome,â Womack said. "Got one of my childhood best friends at home plate with the jug, itâs pretty awesome. Just knowing you got the whole team in your corner, itâs great."
Silver Lake has been playing close games all season. This marked their fourth win of the season, decided by one run. The Eagles have also lost five games by this margin.
âWalking it off like that is huge,â Seele said. "The first round game is always tough and credit to Perry, they played phenomenal today. That is one thing that we have done this year, we do fight.â

Johnson pitched the entire game for the Eagles. After allowing four runs in the second inning, Johnson really settled into the contest. He allowed five hits and struck out four batters in the game.
âDayne is our best competitor,â Seele said. âI was really proud of him because we actually talked about it being third time through the order and going to someone different. He locked it in for the last four innings; he dominated.â
No. 7 Silver Lake will go on the road to No. 2 Sabetha (22-4) in Class 3A regional semifinals on Tuesday, May 19. The winner will face No. 3 Riverside (16-5) or No. 11 Maranatha Christian Academy (9-16) for the regional championship following the semifinal games on Tuesday night.
âA play like that can definitely bring a team together," Womack said. âWe took two tough losses last week to Sabetha, but those two games really helped us come together as a team.â
