MIAMI GARDENS â After going through six seasons of Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback, the Miami Dolphins are joining the NFLâs wave of mobile quarterbacks.
Malik Willis brings a new element to the Dolphins offense, given his ability to make plays with his legs, as Miamiâs new regime of general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and coach Jeff Hafley distances itself from the limitations Tagovailoa had in his game.
Willis, unproven as an NFL starter but given a three-year, $67.5 million contract off the success he found as a backup in Green Bay with Sullivan and Hafley, could be right up there among the most athletic quarterbacks in the league.
âThatâs kind of where the game is at right now. If you look around the league, those kind of guys are being really successful, so itâs very encouraging that you have a guy like that,â said new Dolphins passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo, who was Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator last season.
âWhen guys are playing like that, you donât want to ever take that away from them. Thatâs a big piece of their game. ⊠Allow their ability to take over once the ball is snapped, feel the play, see what they need to see and then make plays with their legs and/or outside the pocket with his arm.â
Willis can use his feet to extend plays while possessing a rocket of an arm, although he still has to master accuracy, decision-making and timing within an offense.
âReally talented individual. Can spin the ball all over the field, can throw the ball everywhere, can run, obviously can use his legs, heâs tough,â said Dolphins offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, who was , on Tuesday. âBut honestly, what Iâve enjoyed the most so far is getting to know him. The person is really fun to be around, really energetic. He infuses everybody with a lot of energy, just makes you want to be involved in whatever heâs doing. And heâs been fun to coach.
Malik Willis signed a three-year contract worth $67.5 million with the Miami Dolphins.
Malik Willis is known for his mobility and ability to make plays with his legs, contrasting with Tua Tagovailoa's more traditional quarterback style.
General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley are the key figures shaping Malik Willis's role in the Dolphins' offense.
Malik Willis is expected to bring a new dynamic to the Dolphins' offense, allowing for more playmaking opportunities both with his legs and arm.

Patullo has the experience of working with a mobile quarterback in Philadelphia, Jalen Hurts. Patullo was let go from the Eagles after one season in charge of the entire offense, but he had a successful run through four seasons as pass game coordinator there, while also being associate head coach for two of those.
âI was with (Hurts) for five years and through different phases of it,â Patullo said. âSo I think just going forward from it, just seeing what you can do with a guy like that and how successful you can be brings a lot.â
Slowik can let his imagination run wild with things he can do in the run game with Willis at quarterback. The threat of him receiving the snap with speedy running back DeâVon Achane next to him could form a formidable read option or run-pass option.
Slowik, who has only scratched the surface on discussing scheme with Willis to this point in the offseason, pumps the brakes on those ideas, though, while he sees the value in the conflict it creates for opposing defenses.
âAnytime you have a quarterback who has the ability to run, itâs not something that you are going to do down in, down out in the NFL, but the threat of it makes it 11 versus 11, as opposed to 11 on 10,â Slowik said. âAnd I think thatâs what can get tough sometimes when you get a guy that maybe isnât as mobile at quarterback, is they have 11 guys and, aside from throwing the ball, youâre really playing with 10. So it just lets you equalize some advantageous situations. Outside of that, really the mobility these days shows up more in off-schedule situations than it does anything.â
Slowik did note there will be similarities in the offense to what Willis did with the Packers.
But beyond how dynamic Willis can be in the offense, Slowik just appreciates his new quarterbackâs work ethic.
âI was excited about the player, and as Iâve gotten to know the person, Iâve been very excited about the person,â he said.
New Dolphins quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan said Willis is the first one into the building and last one to leave daily through the offseason workout program.
âI think heâs got this natural knack of knowing exactly who he is and his ability to bring people together,â Hamdan said. âSo Iâve been extremely impressed with that, the preparation piece. And certainly heâs got the skill set to be a really, really good player.â
Now, itâs about maximizing Willisâ opportunity as a starter after four years of backup play between the Packers and Tennessee Titans.
âHe realizes you donât get these opportunities often,â Hamdan said, âand so I think heâs done a tremendous job of rallying the guys, all the guys, regardless of where theyâre from, what position they play. And thatâs been a big thing for us as we start in this new year.â
