Eagles general manager Howie Roseman typically values long-term upside and is comfortable drafting players who are not fully developed but have star potential.
âA lot of times in the draft weâll talk about what could this player be in year three, what could this player be at the maturity of the player not just the first year,â Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said on Tuesday. âAnd so we do that because we think we have the right people in the building to get them at their peak.â
The reward is often great.
Over the last five years, Philadelphiaâs coaching staff has done a great job of helping the teamâs top draft picks develop into starters, including the ones who needed more refinement like small-school project Jalyx Hunt. He helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl in 2024 and now heâs one of their top pass rushers.
Given their history of taking developmental projects, itâs no surprise the Eagles could be interested in drafting UCF edge rusher Malachi Lawrence next week. According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Eagles hosted Lawerence on a visit during the pre-draft process.
Hosting Lawrence on a visit doesnât automatically mean the Eagles have interest, but heâs the type of player the front office covets. Lawrence has a large frame (6-4 3/8âł, 253 pounds) paired with long arms (33 5/8âł) and is an elite, explosive athlete. He has a quick first step and a diverse bag of moves.

Lawrence does have some issues. Heâs an average run defender, lacks great bend and doesnât always play with great power. Despite those concerns, heâs likely to get drafted in the first round. He has the potential to become a top-tier pass rusher after he cleans up some of his inconsistencies.
The Eagles could bet on that upside and select Lawrence with the 23rd pick.
