As his Eastmoor Academy boys track and field team celebrated its first City League championship since 2022, a tearful coach Jason Lewis had something else on his mind.
Lewis dedicated the win to Devon Biggs, a former athlete in the program who died in May 2023, just a few days before the league meet. Biggs, a freshman, was killed when a driver, trying to avoid stopped traffic, veered off the road and struck him on the sidewalk.

âHe loved his team,â Lewis said. âWe watched these guys grow, and we know he would have been on this team. They ran the best that they have for the year. We take a lot of pride in this program. ... Every day we think of Devon.â

The Warriors finished second in the league meet in 2023, ending a streak of 11 consecutive titles. They returned to the top this season by scoring 139 points in the meet May 12 and 14 at Africentric, finishing well ahead of runner-up Beechcroft (83), which .

On the girls side, Whetstone (111) won its fourth consecutive league title, edging runner-up Northland (107). The Braves secured the title by taking second in the final race, the 1,600-meter relay (4 minutes, 21.29 seconds), ahead of third-place Northland (4:22.19).
Biggsâ memory motivated the Warriors, said senior Malachi Awale, who won the 300 hurdles (39.69) and finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.19).
âThis means a lot to me,â Awale said. âWeâve been working four long years for this. We came close so many times and we finally got it. I just want to remember my friend Devon. We do it all for him. It was a team effort. It wasnât just the sprinters or distance group. It was everybody together.â
Donovan Delph contributed to the title by winning the long jump (22 feet, 8œ inches), while Jaydyn Turner won the 800 (2:00.8) and Braylon Fayne won the 3,200 (10:32.84).
Delph, Turner, Dajon West and Willie Poindexter closed the meet by winning the 1,600 relay (3:26.95), and Turner, West, Brice Graham and Yuri West won the 3,200 relay (8:26.53).
Beechcroftâs Nehemiah Mills pulled off an impressive feat, winning the 100 (10.87), 200 (21.38) and 400 (49.26).

The Braves captured their fourth title in a row behind senior Miriam Rule, who won the 800 (2.26.7) and 1,600 (5:16.29) and joined Lyla McFadden, Madeleine Rubel and Rosa Shuman-Roth on the first-place 3,200 relay (10:36.88).
Rule, who will run at Johns Hopkins, transferred to Whetstone after attending West as a freshman.
âWe have some great coaches, and our team culture is really great,â Rule said. âWe have weekly pasta parties. We support each other outside of practice and that makes a huge difference in training.â
Shuman-Roth won the 400 (1:01.38) and McFadden won the 3,200 (13:44.67).
Beechcroftâs Celeste Hutchinson won the 100 (12.8) and 200 (26.19), and Northlandâs Amirah Stewart finished first in the shot put (38-7) and discus (112-10).
