Perhaps you've seen some headlines about Los Angeles Dodgers Edwin Diaz and cockfighting, and you're wondering what's going on there. We're here to help and answer questions you might have about the allegations.
Here's where it all stems from: USA TODAY Sports' Josh Peter reports that photos of jockeys Jose Ortiz and Irad Ortiz Jr. on social media tied them to illegal cockfighting.
Diaz "is linked to cockfighting events in Puerto Rico based on photos found by USA TODAY Sports on social media," Peter reports, noting there are photos on Facebook of the Dodgers vet advertising cockfighting tournaments. While cockfighting is banned in every state and United States territory -- including Diaz's native Puerto Rico -- it's still practiced.
The investigation details more about Diaz's involvement in the past with his family entering roosters into tournaments.
Cockfighting, per the ASPCA, "is a blood sport in which two roosters specifically bred for aggression are placed beak to beak in a small ring and encouraged to fight to the death."
Per Peter:
Attempts by USA TODAY Sports to reach Diaz through the Dodgers and THE TEAM, an agency that represents Diaz, were unsuccessful. A representative with MLB declined comment when contacted by USA TODAY.
