Manning was initially heavily favoring Texas. Head coach Mack Brown had the program "rocking and rolling," and Manning was highly enticed by the opportunity to succeed star running back Ricky Williams.
The trajectory changed when then-Ole Miss head coach Tommy Tuberville suddenly left the Rebels to take the head coaching job at Auburn.
Ole Miss hired David Cutcliffe to replace Tuberville. Cutcliffe was Peyton Manning’s offensive coordinator at Tennessee. Eli already knew him well, attended his football camps, and loved his offensive scheme.
Cutcliffe went "on a mission" to recruit Manning, which ultimately convinced him to abandon his plans in Texas and commit to Ole Miss.
“I was probably going to Texas,” Eli Manning said. “Mack Brown was the head coach, and they were kind of rocking and rolling there. Ricky Williams was gonna be leaving; he was in his senior year. Was gonna go to Texas and then David Cutcliffe — the Ole Miss staff, Tommy Tuberville and their whole staff, left Ole Miss, went to Auburn.”

During his time at the University of Mississippi from 1999 to 2003, Eli Manning became one of the greatest quarterbacks in SEC history. Playing under head coach David Cutcliffe, the star player broke 47 to 54 team records.
Across 43 games for the Rebels, his excellent play resulted in 10,119 passing yards and 81 passing touchdowns. By throwing for over 10,000 yards, he became the fifth player in SEC history to reach that mark.
