UNC basketball is actively pursuing transfer portal players, including FAU's Devin Williams, a top shot-blocker. Williams averaged 2.6 blocks per game last season, showcasing his defensive skills.
Just when you think Michael Malone is done adding to his first UNC basketball roster, think again. Essentially creating their roster from scratch, the Tar Heels continue to target transfer portal players, particularly in their frontcourt.
Malone recently secured a commitment from star international big man Sayon Keita, who should start in Chapel Hill from Day One. North Carolina's highest-profile addition is Utah guard Terrence Brown, who nearly averaged 20 points per game last year.
The Tar Heels' latest portal target, FAU big man Devin Williams, proved himself as one of the country's premier shot-blockers a season ago.
Williams started all 33 games for the Owls in their 2025-26 campaign, averaging 7.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest, while shooting 51 percent from the field. Williams' best asset is his shot-blocking ability, averaging 2.6 blocks per contest, tied for third across Division I.
Williams began his collegiate career at UCLA during the 23-24 season, averaging just 3.3 minutes per game across 10 appearances. After redshirting the 24-25 campaign, Williams broke out to become one of the nation's premier shot-blockers.
With UNC losing Caleb Wilson (1.4 blocks per game) and Henri Veesaar (1.2) to the 2026 NBA Draft, a majority of last season's block production is gone. Jarin Stevenson (0.7) will undoubtedly see an increase in blocks this coming season, as he's a projected starter, while Keita will also be a huge defensive help in the post.
If Malone can add Williams to his first Tar Heel roster, there's reason to believe the offseason excitement in Chapel Hill.
