Energetic pitching staff fuels hot Kansas ballclub

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Jayhawks are riding a seven-game winning streak, following a 14-1 run-rule win over Wichita State on Tuesday.

While the club’s offense, hitting .296 as a team, is a crucial part of KU’s success, great starting and relief pitching are key to the squad’s success.

Kansas’ pitching staff averages 10 strikeouts per game, but the team believes their infectious energy is equally as important.

“I think Fitz likes seeing the energy we bring to the game and likes seeing how it affects our play as a team,” Kannon Carr said, a senior right-handed pitcher. “The guys who are in the dugout or in the bullpen aren’t quite getting the innings, they contribute a lot to the success of our team just by the energy that they bring in the dugout.

Kansas baseball head coach Dan Fitzgerald knows that attitude and excitement in the dugout doesn’t have the same type of impact in all clubhouses, but is a strong part of this squad’s DNA.

“We’re pretty good when our energy is hot,” Fitzgerald said. “But I think that’s who they are, so it doesn’t take much to get them there.”

Kansas pitchers and the rest of the team will look to carry their high energy to this weekend’s series with Arizona. First pitch for Friday’s game is set for 6 p.m.
