Jaylen Brown has complained about the NBA officials all season, and he resorted to it again after the Boston Celtics lost Game 7 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, completing their historic collapse after blowing a 3-1 series lead.
"They clearly had an agenda. Maybe because I had spoken and was critical of the refs in the regular season. So you know how they responded? Youâre going to lead the playoffs in offensive fouls. That was the response from the officiating crew," Brown said during his Twitch livestream on Sunday.
Former Celtics star Kendrick Perkins clearly didn't appreciate those comments and Brown dodging accountability, however, ripping him in an expletive-laden rant on Monday's episode of the "Road Trippin' Show" podcast.
"I donât want to hear that. It was no agenda whatsoever. The agenda was that yâall couldnât make shots," Perkins said. "The agenda was yâall refused to switch up yâallâs style of play of shooting threes after threes when at times, yâall could have drove the damn basketball and got some f***ing layups or put some pressure on the referees. The referees are not going to give the Celtics calls because they shoot a lot of jump shots."
Perkins is right on that front. Boston ranked last in the NBA in free-throw attempts during the regular season, but that's not surprising for a team that was fourth in 3-point attempts. The Celtics play away from the basket and prefer to hoist threes rather than attack the rim, so they don't shoot many free throws as a result.
Perkins also criticized Boston for losing three of its four home games during the series and not doing enough to protect its home court.
"It used to be a sacred place. It used to be a hard place for opponents to win games in there," Perkins continued.
The Celtics have, weirdly, been better on the road than at home in the postseason under Joe Mazzulla, losing a number of home games as heavy favorites. If Boston had merely gone .500 at home against the Sixers, they'd still be playing basketball.
