ESPN has extended veteran NHL broadcaster John Buccigross's contract for multiple years, allowing him to continue his role in NHL and college hockey coverage as he approaches 30 years with the network. Buccigross has been a key figure in hockey broadcasting since joining ESPN in 1996.
ESPN has moved to secure one of its most familiar voices, announcing a multi-year contract extension for veteran broadcaster John Buccigross. The network confirmed the news on X, highlighting that Buccigross will continue his work across NHL and college hockey coverage as he enters his 30th year.
Buccigross has been a constant presence since joining ESPN in October 1996. Over time, he has grown from a news anchor into a central figure in hockey broadcasting. His roles span play-by-play duties, studio hosting, and anchoring on flagship programs like SportsCenter.
In a statement, Buccigross reflected on his long journey with the network. He recalled watching ESPN as a teenager and dreaming of working there.

“ESPN was launched in 1979 when I was 13,” Buccigross said in his statement. “When I saw Chris Berman do SportsCenter I said, ‘that’s where I want to work.
“With right timing and lots of blessings it happened in 1996. I love my teammates and love sports. I’m a one uniform guy, and this is the only team I want to play for.”
The extension comes at an important time for ESPN’s hockey coverage. Since regaining NHL media rights in 2021, the network has expanded its programming and leaned on experienced voices. Buccigross plays a major role in that setup, serving as host of “The Point” and leading NHL Draft coverage.
Buccigross’ recent work includes calling the NCAA Frozen Four, a role he has held for over a decade. That consistency has helped him build strong credibility among hockey fans. His passion for the sport and deep knowledge continue to stand out across broadcasts.
“They [NHL] want to grow the game with us,” Buccigross said in 2021, via NHL. “Their success is our success and vice versa. I hope just the four letters will bring out a different side of them.”
For ESPN, retaining Buccigross ensures continuity during a period of steady growth in hockey coverage. With the NHL partnership running through the 2027–28 season, this extension makes sense.
The deal signals trust in a broadcaster who has shaped ESPN’s hockey identity for nearly three decades.
