ESPN's "The Pick is In" documentary was an eye-opening look inside the draft rooms for a couple of teams, the Browns being one of them.
The clip of Andrew Berry navigating the top of the draft board to drop down from pick six to pick nine with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire additional draft capital and still get the top player on the board was a job well done by Andrew Berry.
On Tuesday, ESPN's Peter Schrager talked about the maneuver on his podcast, The Schrager Hour, where he complimented how Andrew Berry controlled his room.
There was actually a lot to unpack with what happened. Berry was the nucleus of the entire draft room. He sat in the middle of the table with his head coach directly to his right and the owner of the franchise a couple of spots down. Behind him in the audience seating were all of his area scouts getting ready for when they were called on.
Carnell Tate went off the board at pick number four, and the Browns then zeroed in on three players: Spencer Fano, Jordyn Tyson, and Francis Maiugoa. When Cleveland came up at pick number 6, they could have very easily picked Fano at that spot and been good.
Instead, Berry said that those three players were his target. He truly only had one legit trade partner because he had to stay in front of the Giants. He did that when he struck a deal with the Chiefs. Adam Schefter said it best: Cleveland got the guy they wanted while picking up two additional picks in the process.
The maneuver is one that many have taken note of. Schrager talked on his show about how impressive his decision-making was to control his room, communicate to his owner what he was thinking, confidently stand on his decisions, turn down a trade, and still get the guy they wanted.
Berry and the Browns put together a really solid draft on paper. That, unfortunately, doesn't mean all that much if they don't develop on the field. Now is when Berry and the front office pass the torch to Monken and the coaching staff to turn this young core of players into future stars in this league.
