Harold Reynolds spent a long segment on MLB Network on Wednesday night arguing against the concept of Shohei Ohtani, the pitcher.
The long-time MLB infielder doesn't like the idea that Ohtani seems to be heavily focused on pitching this year for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani wasn't in the hitting lineup Wednesday when he started (and threw a gem), and he's expected to get a rest day Thursday before returning to DH on Friday.
Reynolds argued with his colleagues that Ohtani's pitching was taking away from his MVP credentials.
That misses the point entirely.

Sure, it'd be great if Ohtani was in the batting lineup for 162 games, and pitched during some of those, too.
But what about the world where Ohtani starts 30 games on the mound, then hits in 130? That's 130 more games as a superstar hitter than any other starting pitcher in the majors is providing, and Ohtani is currently pitching as well as anyone, too, with his 0.82 ERA.
Harold Reynolds believes that Ohtani's emphasis on pitching detracts from his value as a hitter and could impact his MVP chances.
Shohei Ohtani is primarily focusing on pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers, with plans to return to designated hitter duties soon.
Ohtani threw a strong game as a pitcher, showcasing his skills despite not being in the hitting lineup.

Like, before Ohtani existed, if you had told a team that their ace would also hit 27 homers for them that season on days he wasn't pitching, wouldn't you take that?
Ohtani has changed the calculus, although not for the whole sport, just for himself. He's still the most valuable player out there by a wide margin if he makes 30 quality starts on the mound and is a really good leadoff hitter in more than half of his team's other games.
Babe Ruth never did that. He was a pitcher, then a hitter, with very little crossover -- beside the fact that in those days, Ruth would always hit for himself when he was pitching.
But at least in the modern context of a two-way player, Ruth was never anything like Ohtani.
So sure, maybe it's a step back for Ohtani to not hit every single day. But when you're stepping back from the center of the baseball universe, you can still land on a very bright star.
