The Mets are reeling.
After their latest loss, their eighth straight, dropping them to 7-12 — last in the NL East — Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was out of answers.
Asked what his players needed to do to play better, Mendoza didn’t mince words:
“Guys (have got to) start playing better,” Mendoza said bluntly in a clip shared on X/Twitter. “It’s as simple as that. They’re too talented. But right now we’re not seeing anything on the field. It doesn’t have anything to do with preparation or with the work they’re putting in. We just have to go out there and do it.”
Shortly after, former Mets general manager Jim Duquette praised Mendoza’s answers.
Sure the team hasn’t won a game since, arguably their best hitter, Juan Soto landed on the injured list with a calf strain, but that’s no excuse.
“Juan Soto’s return won’t ‘fix’ this brand of baseball,” Duquette wrote, quote-tweeting Mendoza’s clip, “I’m glad Carlos said what needed to be said.”
New York has scored 12 runs and has averaged just under six hits per game during this eight-game skid. In their last 38 innings, they’ve scored three runs.
