Ex-MLB executive shuts down Aaron Boone outrage after Yankees collapse: ‘Leave him alone’

Every fan base has a breaking point. For many Yankees fans, apparently, it’s a sweep in Milwaukee.

After New York dropped all three games to the Brewers — and then a fourth straight loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday — the temperature in the Yankees universe shot up fast.

The stat fueling the outrage? A 1-8 record against teams with winning records.

The target? Manager Aaron Boone.

Former MLB executive David Samson stepped into the middle of that debate on his podcast, and offered his take:

“The Yankees got swept. Aaron Boone shouldn’t be concerned about 1-8 against winning teams. It’s irrelevant,” Samson said in a YouTube video.

That’s Samson’s position, and he backs it up with the standings. At the time of the sweep, the Yankees were 26-15, one game back of Tampa Bay, and 7.5 games ahead of Toronto.

Samson’s broader argument is about proportionality. Calling for a manager’s job after a bad series — especially this early in the season — is a reaction that ignores everything else the team has done.
