For countless players, the EPL has simply proven too tough a nut to crack, prompting them to cut their losses prematurely and return abroad before their contracts are even up.
It’s too late for Zirkzee to change the fate of his Red Devils future, but he could decide to test his resolve with the Toffees, who are said to be among his suitors in the lead-up to the window opening.
Everton sit 10th-placed heading into their final two fixtures, though a win from their next outing could put them within just a point of seventh-placed Brighton and Hove Albion, depending on how they fare in their respective clash.
Zirkzee, meanwhile, will just be hoping he can add some minutes to his account before the campaign draws to a close.
The hour and five minutes he played in the Sunderland stalemate last weekend marked his lengthiest cameo since December 4, as well as his first start under Michael Carrick and just his fifth of the season.
After missing the first two games of Carrick’s tenure through injury, the Dutch international has struggled to nail down a consistent role.
He has been brought off the bench on seven occasions while being an unused substitute for five whole matches. As a result, he has totalled a mere 101 minutes of action throughout the interim manager’s reign, and he has yet to return a goal or an assist in that time.
Zirkzee’s complete record for United
Ex-United chief scout weighed in on Zirkzee’s situation when speaking to Football Insider. He said: “A move to Everton is a real possibility for Zirkzee.
“Whatever you might say about his time at Man United, he does put in a shift, he works hard, and you can never accuse him of not trying his best to make an impact.
“It might not be good enough for Man United, where he’s competing with the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo, but that’s not the case at Everton.
“He’s perfect for David Moyes because he works hard, he can hold the ball up and bring his teammates into play. He’s not afraid to move in behind the defence as well.
“It’s a move that could work out for everybody, because it would mean he gets more playing time, Everton get a new striker, and Man United get some money.”
