The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs this offseason, and now that he has been found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery, he sent a message to teams pleading his case to be signed.
"This is not an opinion-based sport, so here are the numbers," Diggs wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a highlight reel. "I played 52% of the snaps and finished with 85 catches for 1,045 yards coming off an ACL. Where we going?"
Diggs was one of the most important players on the Patriots' last season. He led the team in receptions and receiving yards. He also emerged as a leader. However, he will turn 33 soon and would have had a $26 million-plus cap hit if the Patriots kept him. However, Diggs thinks he can be even better than he was last season.
Diggs will be a year older, but he will also be a year further removed from tearing his ACL. He also pointed out that he was only on the field for just a little more than half of the offensive snaps. He could put up monster numbers with even more playing time. The best fit for Diggs right now would be a team that needs a veteran pass catcher who can contribute in a big way.
The problem for Diggs right now is that teams that needed wide receivers have already built depth through the NFL Draft. Signing Diggs now would take playing time away from a young player the team invested a draft pick in. However, that does not mean he won't get signed.
Injuries happen, and teams are always looking for talented receivers. Diggs has a strong resume and has proved he can contribute to a contending team. Some team will give him another opportunity, and he expects to thrive wherever he goes.
