The Boston Red Sox made a major move to acquire Caleb Durbin in a six-player deal, and one of the players they traded, David Hamilton, just had one of the best games of his career.
Hamilton has played in 221 career games in the big leagues, with 204 of those coming for the Red Sox. However, he had never had a four-hit game until Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. He had five three-hit games for the Red Sox, but that fourth hit had always eluded him.
Hamilton started at shortstop in place of Joey Ortiz against right-handed pitcher Keider Montero. His first hit came on a soft bunt to the third base side in the second inning to load the bases. He flew out in his next at-bat in the fourth inning.
In the seventh inning, he hit a 104.1 mph single. He picked up an infield single in the eighth inning as well. His final at-bat came in the ninth inning, when he hit another single to right field.
Hamilton looks like a different player with the Brewers than he was with the Red Sox. The Brewers have him playing their style of baseball, really utilizing his speed. He has 12 hits in 17 games, but his exit velocity has not been great. He has a lot of ground balls, but he is playing hard and picking up some infield singles.
He is running the bases well, currently ranking in the 84th percentile for baserunning run value. His whiff and strikeout rates are night and day from last year, and his walk rate is significantly better as well.
