The Boston Red Sox decided not to re-sign Lucas Giolito in the offseason, and he remains unsigned. Giolito recently appeared on "Baseball Isn't Boring" and revealed that he has not signed because he is looking for the right value.
"The last few months have been very strange to where talks seem like they're heating up," Giolito said on Friday. "And then it's like, OK, never mind. I just want to play for close to what my value is."
According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, Giolito is drawing interest from the Chicago Cubs now. The Cubs lost Cade Horton to a season-ending elbow injury. Matthew Boyd is currently injured and Justin Steele will not be back until late May or early June. The Cubs have Shōta Imanaga and Edward Cabrera, but they need better options than Javier Assad and Colin Rea.
Boyd will be back on the next homestand. When he returns, the rotation will feature him, Imanaga, Cabrera, Jameson Taillon and either Assad or Rea.
The Cubs do not have much depth right now and could use help. Giolito has been throwing bullpen sessions and is ready to do whatever any team needs him to do.
"When I get the opportunity, it's like, all right, cool. Do you want me to throw a game in Triple-A to get ready, or do you want to put me right in for five innings? Like, I'll do whatever," Giolito said on "Baseball Isn't Boring." "I'm happy to do whatever once I get an opportunity to help a team."
Giolito had a resurgent season last year. He posted a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts. He missed all of 2024 and had a 4.89 ERA in the previous two seasons. He was an All-Star in 2019. He is a capable starter who could help the Cubs.
