The Giants have been a disaster offensively, ranking last in MLB in runs per game and home runs. Rafael Devers' struggles in the middle of their lineup have been a big reason why.
Devers is off to a rough start in his first full season with San Francisco after getting traded there last June. Through 18 games, the former Red Sox star is batting .229/.280/.329 with just three extra-base hits, six RBI, 21 strikeouts and -0.5 WAR.
After striking out again in his first at-bat on Wednesday, Devers slammed his bat on the ground in frustration before snapping it in half as he walked back to the dugout.
It's been that kind of season for Devers and the Giants, who lost their fourth straight game on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds.
A three-time All-Star with Boston, Devers hasn't been the same since joining San Francisco and changing positions. In 108 games with the Giants, the 29-year-old slugger is slashing an underwhelming .235..336/.437, well below his career .279/.349/.510 line before the trade.

Leaving Fenway Park hasn't helped, but many of his advanced stats are also trending in the wrong direction. His bat speed, average exit velocity, walk rate and hard-hit rate are all way down compared to last year, indicating that his best years may already be behind him.
Devers has historically been a slow starter before heating up in May, so perhaps San Francisco just needs to be patient with him. He did have two hits on Wednesday and has hit safely in six of his last seven games, so perhaps he's snapping out of it.
If the Giants want to turn their season around, they need him to.
