Papers: Arsenal's Champions League winning bonuses revealed
Arsenal players could earn £1.175 million if they win against PSG in the Champions League final.
The NCAA has voted to expand the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments from 68 to 76 teams. This decision was made unanimously by the basketball committees, although further administrative steps are required.
Expanding the NCAA Tournament honors college sports' tradition of fixing what's not broken
BLOOMINGTON — Nothing so adequately fixes what isn’t broken as college sports.
On Thursday afternoon, the NCAA’s Division I men’s and women’s basketball committees voted in favor of expanding their respective postseason tournaments from 68 to 76 teams.
Unanimously, in fact, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. There are more bureaucratic and administrative hurdles to clear, but this was the one that counts, and it came without apparent dissent.
The news is and should not be surprising. Charlie Baker, the association’s president, has been pushing for tournament expansion for months, at least. The topic has gained traction in some fashion seemingly annually for more than a decade. Still, it’s happening — this expansion will be the most substantial since the tournament moved to 64 teams in 1985 — whether we like it or not.
Auburn Tigers compete against Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday, April 5, 2026, during the NIT men's basketball championship game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The NCAA basketball tournaments will expand from 68 to 76 teams starting next season.
The NCAA aims to enhance the postseason experience and increase participation in college basketball.
The expanded format is expected to take effect in the upcoming postseason.
There are bureaucratic and administrative hurdles that still need to be addressed before the expansion is finalized.

Arsenal players could earn £1.175 million if they win against PSG in the Champions League final.

In this, college athletics is no different to the world around it. Realistically, it never has been.
Nearly every major decision taken in the college sports space in living memory can be traced back to the same root causes: money and access. Sometimes, they are separate. Often, they’re the same. Always, they represent the pursuit of greater power.
Here, the NCAA further entrenches itself as the hand that guides the second most lucrative college sport in America. And it positions the next NCAA Tournament media rights deal as potentially more appealing (and therefore more lucrative) than the one that currently pays out roughly $1 billion annually.
The association has no substantial revenue-earning role in the Football Bowl Subdivision, which decides its fate on a self-organized, self-governed playoff. We’ll get to that.
For now, stick to the aforementioned rights deal, which expires in 2032. That means we’re probably 3 to 4 years away from beginning to renegotiate it. Fox’s College Basketball Crown tournament — which is almost certainly not better off for Thursday’s news — is a convenient demonstration of that potential TV partner’s interest in the sport. An anticipated merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. is expected to pave the way for CBS Sports and TNT Sports to become one entity, perhaps as early as this year. ESPN will always cast its shadow.
IU coach speaks: Why Darian DeVries views NCAA Tournament expansion 'like the portal'
Next time the NCAA takes its tournament to market, it will hope all those parties entertain serious bids. The bigger the tournament, the greater the ask. The more at-large teams, the more chance you’ll see brand names included in that tournament, further expanding its appeal.
Money and access.
Never mind, of course, how much this will consolidate for the already rich. There’s no indication (at least none yet) that this move will create more opportunities for mid- or low-major teams. Just another few inches toward further centralization of power for those that already wield an unhealthy amount of it.
The same can be said for the College Football Playoff, which is barreling toward a 24-team field. We worried a four-team playoff would dilute the value of college football’s regular season, then we expanded that field to 12. Now, we worry about that even more, and we’re going to expand to 24 anyway.
Basketball probably won’t suffer as meaningfully, both because it already had a sizable postseason and because, at least for the moment, we’re not robbing the sport of its most valuable idea: Cinderella. But we’re also not making it any easier for her to get to the ball.
If anything, we’re creating more financial and influential levers that make it easier to pick off upstart mid-majors. The transfer portal, NIL and revenue sharing already carve an enormous chunk of talent out of that part of the sport, annually. Consolidating more wealth and power only weakens that competitive floor further.
This is nothing new, of course. Remember the Pac-12? Remember when it was the Pac-10? Did you know it only became the Pac-10 because USC and UCLA threatened to leave, in 1976, if Arizona and Arizona State weren’t admitted? Look it up.
Money and access.
If there’s any comfort in Thursday’s news, it’s that we finally got it over with. Expansion has been a hot-button offseason topic for years, like some annual rite of passage we all had to endure before we could start worrying about the actual basketball again. Now, at least for a while, that conversation is put to bed.
Until it’s raised again. History tells us it will be someday. There’s nothing new under the sun, and nothing so reliable in college sports as manufacturing a solution in search of a problem.
The NCAA tournaments were fine the way they were, and they’ll probably still be fine now. Which begs the question: Why did we need to mess with a good thing? Because at some point, tinkering too much will cause it to fall apart.
