With offseason programs underway for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where does head coach Liam Coen want to see from Trevor Lawrence as Phases I, II, and III unfold over the next month-plus?
"When we get out on the grass, specifically, is that the expectation is that he's kind of playing at a level to which he was at the end of last season," Coen said on Monday. "From a footwork standpoint, a ownership of the system, communication, cadence, overall command, and throwing and catching the football."
Coen continued, "For him, the leadership the command and also the way that he was throwing the football toward the end of the season, the expectation is that we pick off there and let's role."
Lawrence finished the 2025 season as a finalist for the league's MVP award after completing 61% of his passes for 4,214 yards with 41 total touchdowns -- including 32 passing -- to 14 interceptions. Among all quarterbacks, he ranked seventh in passing yards and fourth in passing touchdowns.
During the final two-plus months of the regular season, the Jacksonville offense was one of the best in football, averaging nearly 33 points during that span, with Lawrence leading the way.
He would rank fourth among all quarterbacks in total passing yards in that stretch of games, per PFF. He was also third in yards per pass attempt, second in passing touchdowns, and had the fifth-lowest turnover-worthy play rate. We also saw Lawrence make a lot of plays with his legs.
As the season progressed, one could see Lawrence's comfort within the offense growing. The success he and the offense had began pre-snap with Lawrence's command at the line of scrimmage and him getting that unit into favorable looks.
Coen has undoubtedly communicated to Lawrence what he wants to see from him during offseason programs. But what areas of improvement are on Lawrence's radar?
"There's always little things, technique-wise, whether it's footwork, movement in the pocket," said Lawrence. "Looking over the season, I think I got a lot better in some of my footwork that I changed in the offseason last year as the season went on -- it just takes a lot of reps, and the game reps too it changes a little bit. I got more comfortable as the season went on. I thought that got a lot better.
Expectations include maintaining high performance, improving footwork, and demonstrating leadership skills.

He is expected to improve on footwork, communication, cadence, and overall command of the game.

"And then some of the pocket movements as well. Just being poised in the pocket, subtle movements, staying in a position to throw. I also think that went better as the season went on, but there's also a lot of clips where I know I can improve and get better. I'd say just the consistency piece of it."
As good as Year 1 was for Lawrence under Coen, oftentimes, there can be a leap for a quarterback and an offense in Year 2 of a scheme, with the continuity of being in the same system a catalyst behind that improved play.
Unlike this time last year, Lawrence is not learning a new system, and he's also healthy this year, and able to fully participate right away. A year ago, Lawrence was recovering from shoulder surgery.
