Stefano Domenicali has pushed back against comparisons between Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen, calling it âdisrespectfulâ to liken a young driver to someone who has already left such a significant mark on Formula 1.
Antonelli, still in the early days of his career, is already being touted as Italyâs next big thing. But with those expectations comes pressure, especially when heâs being lined up as the next great hope for his country before even making his F1 debut.
Antonelliâs style has drawn comparisons to Hamilton, not just because of how he drives but also because of his age. He broke F1 records as an 18-year-old rookie in 2025 and has already added more milestones in 2026.
Antonelli became the youngest driver to secure an F1 Grand Prix pole after taking his first in China in March, which he converted to even become the second-youngest race winner after Verstappen. He also became the youngest driver with a fastest lap in the 2025 Japanese GP.
Domenicali told Quotidiano Nazionale: âKimi shouldnât be compared to any of the greats of the past. Itâs not fair on him, and itâs disrespectful to the legends of motor racing.
âIâve known them all, from Senna to Schumi [Michael Schumacher], from [Kimi] Raikkonen to [Fernando] Alonso, right through to Hamilton and Verstappen. Each one has left an indelible mark on F1.
âWhat strikes me about Antonelli, apart from his natural instinct for speed, is the speed with which he learns from his mistakes. And itâs only right that so many Italians compare him to Sinner, recognising themselves in the emotions he generates.
Mercedes sensation Antonelli has previously admitted that he does not like being compared to Senna, despite the Brazilian being his idol, as he would rather be known for his own style and success. Like Domenicali, Toto Wolff has also stated that the comparisons will not help.
Domenicali called the comparisons disrespectful, emphasizing that Antonelli is still early in his career and shouldn't be likened to established legends.
Antonelli broke F1 records as an 18-year-old rookie in 2025 and has continued to achieve milestones in 2026.
Antonelli faces significant pressure due to high expectations placed on him to succeed before even making his F1 debut.

The Bologna boyâs tender age, with Antonelli not turning 20 until this August, has also often inspired comparisons to Verstappen, who broke into F1 in 2015 at 17. Verstappen and Lance Stroll (then aged 18) are the only drivers ever to debut younger than Antonelli.
