The Atlanta Falcons could be in the market for defensive reinforcements early on Day 2 of the NFL Draft, and linebacker CJ Allen is emerging as a strong potential fit following the departure of Kaden Ellis in free agency.
Losing Ellis leaves a noticeable void in the middle of Atlantaâs defense, particularly in terms of leadership, instincts, and sideline-to-sideline production. Thatâs where Allenâs profile becomes especially appealing. Known for his high football IQ and discipline, Allen consistently puts himself in the right position to make plays â a trait that defensive coordinators value highly when plugging gaps in the middle of the field.
Allenâs game is built on instincts and efficiency. He shows strong eye discipline, rarely biting on misdirection, and has the ability to read plays quickly as they develop. Against the run, heâs decisive and physical, shooting gaps with confidence and playing downhill to disrupt ball carriers. At the same time, he has enough range to stretch plays toward the sideline, limiting big gains on the perimeter.
In coverage, Allen brings reliability in zone schemes. He reads the quarterback well, anticipates throws, and breaks on the ball with timing that can close passing windows. While his man coverage still needs refinement  particularly against more dynamic receiving threats  he has shown he can handle running backs in the flat and stay attached through short routes.
Another element of Allenâs game that stands out is his effort as a pass rusher. Though not primarily used in that role, he shows quickness when attacking rush lanes and maintains a high motor, continuing to fight through blocks even when his initial move is stopped.
For Atlanta, Allen represents a balanced option â not necessarily the flashiest prospect, but one with a dependable skill set and room to grow. In the second round, that combination of readiness and upside could make him an ideal target.
The Falcons are looking to fill the linebacker void left by Kaden Ellis's departure, and CJ Allen's skills align well with their needs.
