In August 2025, Simpson-Pusey joined Celtic on a season-long loan deal. However, his loan stint in Scotland was far from ideal, with his first appearance being for their B team in October 2025, followed by his first-team debut in the top-flight in November 2025.
Those also marked to be the centre-back’s only two appearances overall at Celtic, being on the pitch for the first-team for only 64 minutes.
Simpson-Pusey’s tenure at Celtic Park was cut short, followed by his loan move to Koln in the January for the remainder of the ongoing season.
The Englishman has started in nine out of the 10 appearances he has made for the German side in the Bundesliga so far, missing four games due to a muscle injury, two for a red card suspension and another one while being on special leave.
Girona willing to sanction €20M sale for Manchester City transfer target
Following his difficult stint at Celtic, Simpson-Pusey’s loan move to Koln was a crucial one for the City graduate in order to reset his campaign and establish himself as a promising asset.
And it appears the defender has been able to turn things around for himself as the Billy Goats are now considering making a permanent move for him as the season nears its end, as reported by Kicker and relayed by Bulinews.
Earlier in January, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reported that Simpson-Pusey’s loan deal at Koln includes an option to buy, with Manchester City estimating him at £10 million – while the Bundesliga side are ready to offer around £5 million.
Now, with the loan contract’s expiry approaching, Koln are considering triggering the reported €8 million purchase option and if they decide to offer him a permanent deal, Manchester City will be retaining a buy-back clause. Reports have also suggested that Simpson-Pusey is open to a permanent transfer to the German side.
While any official development with respect to this potential move is yet to be announced, Koln’s decision about the youngster is also reportedly dependent on whether the club are able to earn a significant fee from the sale of 19-year-old winger Said El Mala, who has been linked with a move to England this summer.
With his contract at the Etihad Stadium valid until the summer of 2027, it remains to be seen what’s next for Simpson-Pusey ahead of the transfer window.
